Traveling in an RV is a rewarding way to spend time with your family. But sometimes, you have to leave a member behind — your beloved pet! It’s hard to say goodbye to your pets when you leave them with a neighbor or keep them boarded with the vet, especially if you’re going for a long time. The good news is that you can bring your cat or dog along with you for the journey if you take the right precautions. We’ve created this helpful guide to RVing with your pets so you can safely bring the whole family, including your furry friends, along for the journey!

Prepare Your Pet

Your dog or cat will need some time to acclimatize to the RV, so while it’s parked in your driveway at home, take your pet into the RV and allow it to sniff around and explore with your guidance. Have the whole family come in to talk in soothing voices, provide treats, and play with your pet while they get used to this brand-new environment. Have your pet’s water, food, toys, bed, litter box, and treats set up in the RV to give them an idea of what this living space will be like for them.

Practice Good Safety on the Road

If you’re driving a towable RV, make sure your pet is in the towing vehicle with you, not the trailer! It’s much safer for them to be where everyone else is. Take more breaks than you usually would while you’re traveling with your pet. They will need to have some water or food, relieve themselves, and walk around to get fresh air just as you do. Keep your pet on a leash at all times when they’re out of the vehicle, since you never know when another animal or person will frighten your pet and they could attack or run away if provoked.

Maintain Daily Routines

Just like you, your pet benefits from following an established routine so they know what to expect and when to expect it. Feed your pets at their normal times, provide them with sufficient water, give them any necessary medications at the correct times, and take them on walks or play with them as you would at home. Your pet will be much happier and calmer if you can stick to how you do things at home.
